Homs is home to the [[Homs University]] (previously ''Al-Baath University''), one of four major universities in Syria was founded in 1979. A specialist engineering foundation, the university has one of the largest student bodies.<ref>Beattie, 2000, p. 150.</ref> It houses several faculties including medicine, engineering, liberal arts, and sciences and a number of two-year career (vocational) institutions.

The [[Wadi International University|German University]] at Wadi al-Nasarah opened in 2004 and is located {{convert|30|km}} west of the city. There are 1,727 schools and 15,000 kindergartens in the Homs Governorate, most of which are public facilities.
