Additionally, two people associated with the school have been awarded the [[Presidential Medal of Freedom]]. [[Dean Smith]], who played basketball at Kansas from 1949 to 1953 and was a [[Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame|Hall of Fame]] [[North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball|men's basketball]] coach at the [[University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill]], was given the award by [[Barack Obama]] in 2013. Politician [[Bob Dole]], who played football and basketball at the school but did not graduate, was given the [[Presidential Medal of Freedom]] award by [[Bill Clinton]] in 1997.
