Stills is a guitarist whose music draws from myriad genres that include [[rock and roll]], [[blues music|blues]], [[gospel music|gospel]], [[country music|country]] and [[American folk revival|folk music]]. Stills experimented with the guitar itself, including soaking strings in [[barbecue sauce]]<ref>[http://www.4waysite.com/articles/guitarplayer76.htm] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20091026035050/http://www.4waysite.com/articles/guitarplayer76.htm|date=October 26, 2009}}</ref> or flipping pickups to mimic Hendrix playing a right-handed guitar left-handed. He is also known for using alternate [[guitar tunings]], particularly when performing acoustically. Often a long acoustic solo section of the show would showcase agile [[fingerstyle]] playing in standard and altered tunings.
