===Emergency services and justice=== The earliest record of a permanent fire-fighting force in Staines is from 1738, when a hand-operated fire pump was purchased for the brigade.<ref name=Ramsden_1988_pp3-4>{{harvnb|Ramsden|1988|pp=3β4}}</ref> [[Building Act 1774|Reforms in 1774]] transferred responsibility for fire services to the local authority<ref>{{harvnb|Mansfield|1991|p=46}}</ref> and, in 1800, a new manual fire engine was purchased by the Staines force. The Staines UDC purchased the first diesel engine for the brigade in 1926, which was replaced by a Leyland terrier pump escape engine in 1935.<ref name="Ramsden_1988_pp3-4"/> Middlesex County Council took over responsibility for local fire services on 1 April 1948, building a new fire station at Stanwell and closing the Staines station in 1962. Surrey County Council became the fire authority for the local area in 1965.<ref name=Ramsden_1988_p22/> [[File:Staines Police Station, Kingston Road.jpg|thumb|right|Staines Police Station, opened 1998]] The first surviving record of a town [[prison|gaol]] in Staines is from 1274 and the erection of a new [[pillory]] and [[cucking stool|ducking stool]] is described in 1335. There were [[stocks]] in the Market Square through the 16th century until at least 1790.<ref name=Mansfield_1991_pp52-53>{{harvnb|Mansfield|1991|pp=52β53}}</ref> The vestry appointed the town Constable from the early 15th century<ref>{{harvnb|Maryfield|2006|p=49}}</ref> until 1840, when responsibility for law enforcement was passed to the [[Metropolitan Police]].
