The Nathaniel Bowditch School closed in 2018 and the Horace Mann School relocated to their previous location. Salem Academy Charter School and Bentley Academy Charter School are also public schools.<ref name="profiles.doe.mass.edu"/> Private schools are also located in the city, including two independent, alternative schools, The Phoenix School<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://phoenixschool.org/|title=Home|website=The Phoenix School}}</ref> and the Greenhouse School. In late 2007 and early 2008, the city's public school system garnered regional and even national attention after officials announced a $4.7 million budget shortfall that threatened the jobs of teachers and other staff members.
