As of the 2011 census, [[Nepali language|Nepali]] is the most common mother tongue in Kathmandu, with 62% of the population speaking it as their mother tongue. [[Newar language|Newari]] is spoken by 19%, and the other languages spoken in the city include [[Tamang language|Tamang]] (6%), [[Maithili language|Maithili]] (3%), [[Bhojpuri language|Bhojpuri]] (2%), [[Gurung language|Gurung]] (2%), [[Magar language|Magar]] (2%) and [[Sherpa language|Sherpa]] (1%) as their first language.
