===Kentucky Apple Festival===
In the same year as Mayo's death (1914), the first county fair was held in Paintsville, where the first Apple King was also crowned.

In 1962, Johnson County hosted the first [[Kentucky Apple Festival]],<ref name="johnsoncohistory">{{Cite web |last=Johnson County Historical Society |title=Overview of Paintsville and Johnson County History |url=http://www.johnsoncountykyhistory.com/history.html |archive-url=https://archive.today/20001018034615/http://www.johnsoncountykyhistory.com/history.html |url-status=usurped |archive-date=October 18, 2000 |access-date=June 5, 2007}}</ref> which has been held annually in Paintsville since. The streets of downtown Paintsville are closed to vehicular traffic and festivities to include live music and entertainment, along with various competitions.
