The [[President of Romania|president]] can be impeached by [[Parliament of Romania|Parliament]] and is then suspended. A referendum then follows to determine whether the suspended president should be removed from office. President [[Traian Băsescu]] was impeached twice by the Parliament: in 2007 and then again in July 2012. [[2007 Romanian presidential impeachment referendum|A referendum was held]] on 19 May 2007 and a large majority of the electorate voted against removing the president from office.
