Epsom is thought to have acquired a "manual" [[fire engine]] in around the 1760s. It was operated by volunteers and was kept at the clock tower in the High Street. The first full-time [[Fire department|brigade]] was established in 1870 and, by the end of the century, was based on Waterloo Road.
