At the 2021 census, the proportion of white people in the region decreased from 95.4% to 93.1%, while the proportion of black and Asian residents increased significantly. At that time, 87.8% of the region's residents were classed as White British, which was higher than the England average of 73.5%.<ref name="ons.gov.uk"/> The region had the oldest [[Population pyramid|median age]] in England; in the 2011 census, [[West Somerset]] had the UK's oldest average age β almost 48.
