The population of Saint Kitts and Nevis is around 53,000 (July 2019 est.)<ref name="cia.gov"/> and has remained relatively constant for many years.<ref name="britannica.com"/> At the end of the nineteenth century there were 42,600 residents, the number slowly rising to a little over 50,000 by the mid-twentieth century.<ref>{{Cite web|title=Data on St. Kitts and Nevis {{!}} Reconstructing Global Inequality|url=https://clio-infra.eu/Countries/StKittsandNevis.html|access-date=2021-01-26|website=clio-infra.eu|archive-date=5 February 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230205111455/https://clio-infra.eu/Countries/StKittsandNevis.html|url-status=live}}</ref> Between 1960 and 1990, the population dropped from 50,000 to 40,000, before rising again to its current level. Approximately three-quarters of the population live on Saint Kitts, 15,500 of them in Basseterre.
