==Namesakes==
The river gave its name to a boat ''Nene'' of Wisbech, one of whose crew was drowned in the river in 1830,<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000417/18300626/005/0002|title=Huntingdon Gazette|via=[[British Newspaper Archive]]|access-date=6 October 2019}}</ref> the former football team Wisbech Nene Rovers,<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000418/18980930/055/0007|title=Cambridge Independent Press|via=[[British Newspaper Archive]]|access-date=6 October 2019}}</ref> the former Nene College of Higher Education in Northampton, now the [[University of Northampton]], the [[Nene derby]], and also to the [[Rolls-Royce Nene]] [[turbojet]] engine, [[Rolls-Royce Plc|Rolls-Royce]]'s practice being to name their [[gas turbine]] designs after British rivers. The river may also be linked to the fact that Sir [[Henry Royce]] was born in [[Alwalton]],<ref>{{harvnb |Smith |2006 |p=43}}</ref> a village which is by the river, near Peterborough.
