The first vineyards in Lake County were planted in the late 19th century, but [[Prohibition in the United States|Prohibition]] and the county's remoteness dealt a blow to the area's [[viticulture]]. A reemergence of the wine industry began in the 1970s, although most of the region's grapes are still trucked to neighboring [[Napa Valley|Napa]], [[Sonoma County wine|Sonoma]] and [[Mendocino County wine|Mendocino]] counties for [[vinification]].
