Essen has also the largest urban density with cities such as [[Bochum]], [[Gelsenkirchen]] and [[Oberhausen]] borders this city. In 1960, the population reached its historical peak of over 720,000 (Essen was the fifth largest German city at that time) due to its booming industrial era of the Ruhr Area and the West German [[Wirtschaftswunder]]. Since 1970s, the population of Essen declined due to loss of jobs by coal and mining. Essen has a large migrant population, most of them are from [[Turkey]], [[Syria]] and [[Poland]].
