Eos played a small role in the battle of the earthborn [[Giants (Greek mythology)|Giants]] against the gods, known as the Gigantomachy, who rose in rebellion. When their mother, the earth goddess [[Gaia]] learned of a prophecy that the giants would perish at the hand of a mortal, Gaia sought to find a herb that would protect them from all harm; thus Zeus ordered Eos, as well as her siblings Selene ([[Moon]]) and Helios ([[Sun]]) not to shine so that she would not be able to seek for it, and harvested all of the plant for himself, denying Gaia the chance to make the Giants indestructible.<ref>Apollodorus, ''[[Bibliotheca (Pseudo-Apollodorus)|Bibliotheca]]'' [https://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0022%3Atext%3DLibrary%3Abook%3D1%3Achapter%3D6%3Asection%3D1 1.6.2]</ref> Moreover, Eos is seen fighting against the Giants in the south frieze of the [[Pergamon Altar]],<ref>Picón and Hemingway, p.
