Desert Hot Springs lies just south of large nature preserves such as [[Big Morongo Canyon Preserve]] and [[Joshua Tree National Park]].<ref name="traveltips.usatoday.com"/> Surrounding areas are home to a number of species adapted for the desert climate and temperature extremes. Species include [[pronghorns]], [[desert bighorn sheep]], [[desert tortoise]], [[kit fox]], [[desert iguana]], [[horned lizard]], [[chuckwalla]], [[roadrunners]], [[mountain lion]]s, [[Bird of prey|raptors]] and [[Gila monster]]s.
