Danbury is the site of a low-security men's and women's prison, the [[Federal Correctional Institution (Danbury)|Danbury Federal Correctional Institution]], located near the border with New Fairfield.<ref name="FCI Danbury">{{cite web|url=https://www.bop.gov/locations/institutions/dan/|title=FCI Danbury|publisher=Federal Bureau of Prisons|access-date=July 16, 2016|archive-date=September 3, 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160903093448/https://www.bop.gov/locations/institutions/dan/|url-status=live}}</ref> Built in the 1940s to house men, the facility was converted to a women's prison in 1994 to address a shortage of beds for low-security female inmates in other facilities.
