==Government== Chicopee has a mayor-council form of government, with a City Council for its legislative branch and a Mayor for its executive branch. The City Council consists of nine Ward Councilors and four Councilors-at-Large. One Ward Councilor is elected from each ward. The four Councilors-at-Large are elected by all voters in the city. Ward Councilors serve one-year terms, while Councilors-at-Large serve two-year terms. Mayors serve one two-year term. Since 1941, local elections in Chicopee have been non-partisan.<ref name="ChicopeeCharter">{{cite web |title=City of Chicopee, MA Charter |url=https://ecode360.com/12119204 |website=chicopeema.gov |access-date=29 September 2022}}</ref> From 1890 to 1914, the city had a [[Bicameralism|bicameral]] legislature consisting of eight wards, with one member of the Board of Aldermen and two members of the Common Council elected from each ward.<ref name="Szetela1948">{{cite book |last1=Szetela |first1=Thaddeus |title=History of Chicopee |date=1948 |publisher=Szetela & Rich Publishing Company |location=Chicopee, MA |page=106 }}</ref> The city replaced this system by abolishing the Common Council and adding ten aldermen-at-large to the Board of Aldermen.<ref name="OneYearTerms">{{cite news |last1=Jendrysik |first1=Stephen |title=One-year terms made for interesting mayors |url=https://www.masslive.com/living/2014/12/stephen_jenrysik_one-year_terms_made_for_interesting_mayors.html |access-date=13 October 2022 |work=The Republican (Springfield, MA) |agency=MassLive |date=31 December 2014}}</ref> In 2008, the Board of Aldermen approved a home-rule petition to change the legislature's name to the City Council.<ref>{{cite news |last1=Angelo |first1=Holly |title=Petition to change name of Chicopee Board of Aldermen expected to be approved quickly |url=https://infoweb.newsbank.com/apps/news/document-view?p=NewsBank&docref=news/1231B84FE5832E10 |access-date=13 October 2022 |work=The Republican (Springfield, MA) |agency=MassLive |date=8 September 2008}}</ref> The name change took effect in 2009.<ref>{{cite news |title=Cries & whispers too interesting to ignore |url=https://infoweb.newsbank.com/apps/news/document-view?p=NewsBank&docref=news/126919A3E0854D58 |access-date=13 October 2022 |work=Sunday Republican (Springfield, MA) |date=22 February 2009}}</ref> Chicopee also directly elects the following local offices and bodies: * A City Clerk elected to one three-year term * City Collector elected to one three-year term * A City Treasurer elected to one three-year term * Three Assessors elected to one three-year term * A School Committee with two Members-at-Large and nine Ward Members, all elected to one three-year term<ref name="ChicopeeCharter" /><ref>{{cite web |title=Elected Officials |url=https://www.chicopeema.gov/416/Elected-Officials |website=chicopeema.gov |access-date=29 September 2022}}</ref> ===Voter registration=== {| class=wikitable ! colspan = 8 | Registered Voters and Party Enrollment<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.sec.state.ma.us/ele/eleregistrationstats/registrationstats.htm |title=Registration Statistics |author=<!--Not stated--> |access-date=September 29, 2022}}</ref> |- !
