== Medal count == {{further|1896 Summer Olympics medal table}} Ten of the 14 participating nations earned medals, in addition to two medals won by [[Mixed team at the Olympics|mixed teams]] (teams made up of athletes from multiple nations). The IOC has retroactively assigned gold, silver and bronze medals to the three best placed athletes in each event to comport with more recent traditions. In this regard, five of the bronze medalists at the Games are unknown: two in swimming and three in gymnastics. The United States won the most gold medals (11), while host nation Greece won the most medals overall (47), as well as the most silver (18) and bronze (19) medals, finishing with one fewer gold medal than the United States, though having 155 athletes more than the U.S.<ref> {{Cite web|title=Athens 1896 Medal Table|url=https://olympics.com/en/olympic-games/athens-1896/medals|access-date=2021-09-02|website=Olympics.com|language=en}}</ref> ''To sort this table by nation, total medal count, or any other column, click on the [[File:Sort both.gif]] icon next to the column title.''
