''Adventure Guide Germany'', p. 428. Hunter Publishing, Inc, 2005. {{ISBN|978-1-58843-503-3}}</ref> Construction began in 1928 under the auspices of the Wank-Bahn AG and the cable car entered service in 1929.<ref>"[http://www.zugspitze.de/static/cms/downloads/Meilensteine.pdf Meilensteine]". Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG. Accessed 15 December 2010</ref> It is {{convert|3|km|mi}} long and rises from {{convert|740|to|1750|m|ft}} above sea level. The system has been upgraded several times since its opening. In 1960 its passenger capacity was increased from 125 to 210 persons per hour. A new Wankbahn was built in 1982, opening on 18 December, which increased the system's capacity to 1,000 persons per hour. Two 300 kW [[direct current|DC]] motors were installed to drive the cable.<ref name="Daten-Technik">"[http://www.zugspitze.de/static/cms/downloads/Daten-Technik.pdf Daten-Technik]". Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG. Accessed 15 December 2010</ref> The current Wankbahn is built in two sections, measuring {{convert|1670|and|1330|m|ft}} long respectively, with a maximum height of {{convert|45|m|ft}} above the ground. The Wankbahn's 135 cabins each have a capacity of four people. They take approximately 18 minutes at a speed of {{convert|4|m/s|mph|0}} to reach the summit station.<ref name="Daten-Technik" /> A "Wankpass" permits year-round access to the cable car.<ref>"[http://www.zugspitze.de/en/winter/berg/wank/wankpass.htm Wankpass]".
