The University of Tokyo traces its roots to three independent institutes founded during the [[Edo period]] (1603–1868).<ref name=":14" /> The oldest, a Shogun-funded [[Confucianism|Confucian]] school called {{Nihongo|Senseiden|先聖殿}}, was founded in 1630 by [[Razan Hayashi]] in [[Ueno]].<ref>{{Cite web |title=The University of Tokyo |url=https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/whyutokyo/1km_of_campus.html |access-date=2024-04-19 |website=The University of Tokyo |language=en}}</ref> This school was renamed the {{Nihongo|Shoheizaka Institute|昌平坂学問所|Shoheizaka Gakumonjo}} and came to be operated directly by the [[Tokugawa shogunate|Tokugawa Shogunate]] in 1791 as part of the ''[[Kansei Reforms]]''.
