John Cusack's character, Captain Gaff, was based on the real figure of [[Charles W. Davis]], who won a [[Medal of Honor]] on Guadalcanal. The scene in which Gaff leads an attack on a Japanese bunker was inspired by the action for which Davis earned his Medal of Honor.
