The Tertiary period lies between the [[Mesozoic|Mesozoic Era]] and the [[Quaternary|Quaternary Period]], although it is no longer recognized as a formal unit by the [[International Commission on Stratigraphy]].<ref name="Head_etal_2008"></ref><ref name ="Gibbard_etal_2010"></ref>
