===Host selection process===

This was the second time the city had been awarded the Super Bowl on a conditional basis. The owners awarded the game to San Francisco, and no other cities were considered. The plans for the new stadium and mall at [[Candlestick Point State Recreation Area|Candlestick Point]] never materialized. The NFL immediately reopened the bidding for the game.
