Unlike most of Iowa, where prairie dominated, this area was historically woodland.<ref>Samuel Walker Beyer, [https://pubs.lib.uiowa.edu/igsar/article/id/1100/ Geology of Hardin County], Iowa Geological Annual Report 10(1) 1899; pages 241-314, see map between 278,279, see pages 252-253 for topography and page 246 for historical woodland.</ref> ===Climate=== Designated as having a humid continental climate, this region typically has a large seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and cold (sometimes severely cold) winters. Precipitation is relatively well distributed year-round in many areas with this climate. The [[Köppen Climate Classification]] subtype for this climate is "[[Humid continental climate|Dfa]]".
