==Geography== Southern Pines is in southern Moore County in the [[Sandhills (Carolina)|Sandhills Region]] of North Carolina. It is bordered to the south by [[Aberdeen, North Carolina|Aberdeen]], to the west by [[Pinehurst, North Carolina|Pinehurst]], and to the north by [[Carthage, North Carolina|Carthage]] and [[Whispering Pines, North Carolina|Whispering Pines]]. [[U.S. Route 1]] (Sandhills Boulevard) is the primary road through Southern Pines, passing northwest of the downtown area. US-1 leads northeast {{convert|26|mi}} to [[Sanford, North Carolina|Sanford]] and southwest through Aberdeen {{convert|30|mi}} to [[Rockingham, North Carolina|Rockingham]]. [[North Carolina Highway 2]] has its eastern terminus in Southern Pines and leads west {{convert|5|mi|0}} to the center of Pinehurst. [[North Carolina Highway 22|NC 22]] has its southern terminus in Southern Pines and leads north {{convert|11|mi|0}} to Carthage, the Moore [[county seat]]. According to the [[U.S. Census Bureau]], the town of Southern Pines has a total area of {{convert|18.6|sqmi}}, of which {{convert|0.2|sqmi|1}}, or 1.02%, are water.<ref name="CenPopGazetteer2024"/> The center of Southern Pines sits on high ground which drains west toward Aberdeen Creek, a south-flowing tributary of Drowning Creek (the [[Lumber River]]); and east and north toward tributaries of the [[Little River (Cape Fear River tributary)|Little River]], part of the [[Cape Fear River]] watershed.
