==Geography== According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 30.2 sqmi, of which 9.1 sqmi of it is land and 21.0 sqmi of it (69.69%) is water. South San Francisco lies north of San Bruno and San Francisco International Airport in the Colma Creek valley south of Daly City, Colma, Brisbane, and San Bruno Mountain; east of Pacifica and the hills of the northern Coast Range lying along the San Andreas Fault; west of the waters of San Francisco Bay. Locals often refer to the town as South City, in much the same way that San Francisco is called "The City." South San Francisco does not touch on San Francisco, with either Brisbane, Colma, or Daly City lying between them. Most of the valley faces east toward San Francisco Bay, affording bay views from higher levels. South San Francisco has mild winters and dry cool summers. The hills to the west shield the eastern parts of the city from some of the fog that prevails in neighboring areas. The population grew from 4,411 in 1920 to 67,009 in 2014. It has tripled since World War II with the opening of such subdivisions as Buri Buri, Winston Manor and Westborough on the slopes west of El Camino; The city is particularly noted for the South San Francisco hillside sign on Sign Hill, which rises to the north of the city, with large white letters that proclaim "South San Francisco, The Industrial City". The sign, a tribute to the city's industrial past, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. ===Climate=== South San Francisco, along with most of the Bay Area, has a mild mediterranean climate (Köppen climate classification Csb), with warm, dry summers and cool, relatively wet winters. The microclimate of South San Francisco is dominated by wind from the nearby Pacific Ocean, which typically keeps the daytime temperatures quite cool year round, even during the summer months. January is the coolest month with August being the warmest month. The record highest temperature of and was recorded on June 14, 1961. The record lowest temperature of was recorded on December 9, 1972. The normal annual precipitation is 19.64 in. {{Weather box |location = San Francisco International Airport (1991–2020 normals), extremes since 1945 |single line = Y |Jan record high F = 74 |Feb record high F = 78 |Mar record high F = 85 |Apr record high F = 92 |May record high F = 97 |Jun record high F = 106 |Jul record high F = 99 |Aug record high F = 99 |Sep record high F = 104 |Oct record high F = 99 |Nov record high F = 85 |Dec record high F = 75 |year record high F = 106 |Jan avg record high F = 65 |Feb avg record high F = 70 |Mar avg record high F = 75 |Apr avg record high F = 81 |May avg record high F = 84 |Jun avg record high F = 89 |Jul avg record high F = 86 |Aug avg record high F = 87 |Sep avg record high F = 91 |Oct avg record high F = 87 |Nov avg record high F = 74 |Dec avg record high F = 65 |year avg record high F = 94 |Jan high F = 58.0 |Feb high F = 60.8 |Mar high F = 63.4 |Apr high F = 65.6 |May high F = 68.3 |Jun high F = 71.5 |Jul high F = 72.6 |Aug high F = 73.4 |Sep high F = 74.8 |Oct high F = 72.3 |Nov high F = 64.3 |Dec high F = 58.2 |year high F = 66.9 |Jan mean F = 51.3 |Feb mean F = 53.5 |Mar mean F = 55.5 |Apr mean F = 57.3 |May mean F = 59.9 |Jun mean F = 62.5 |Jul mean F = 64.0 |Aug mean F = 64.9 |Sep mean F = 65.3 |Oct mean F = 62.9 |Nov mean F = 56.4 |Dec mean F = 51.4 |year mean F = 58.7 |Jan low F = 44.5 |Feb low F = 46.1 |Mar low F = 47.6 |Apr low F = 49.1 |May low F = 51.6 |Jun low F = 53.6 |Jul low F = 55.3 |Aug low F = 56.4 |Sep low F = 55.9 |Oct low F = 53.4 |Nov low F = 48.5 |Dec low F = 44.6 |year low F = 50.6 |Jan avg record low F = 37 |Feb avg record low F = 39 |Mar avg record low F = 41 |Apr avg record low F = 44 |May avg record low F = 48 |Jun avg record low F = 50 |Jul avg record low F = 52 |Aug avg record low F = 53 |Sep avg record low F = 52 |Oct avg record low F = 48 |Nov avg record low F = 41 |Dec avg record low F = 37 |year avg record low F = 36 |Jan record low F = 26 |Feb record low F = 30 |Mar record low F = 31 |Apr record low F = 36 |May record low F = 39 |Jun record low F = 43 |Jul record low F = 44 |Aug record low F = 45 |Sep record low F = 41 |Oct record low F = 37 |Nov record low F = 31 |Dec record low F = 24 |year record low F = 24 |precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation inch = 3.89 |Feb precipitation inch = 3.96 |Mar precipitation inch = 2.73 |Apr precipitation inch = 1.36 |May precipitation inch = 0.48 |Jun precipitation inch = 0.14 |Jul precipitation inch = 0.00 |Aug precipitation inch = 0.04 |Sep precipitation inch = 0.07 |Oct precipitation inch = 0.79 |Nov precipitation inch = 2.04 |Dec precipitation inch = 4.14 |year precipitation inch = 19.64 |unit precipitation days = 0.01 inch |Jan precipitation days = 11 |Feb precipitation days = 11 |Mar precipitation days = 10 |Apr precipitation days = 6 |May precipitation days = 3 |Jun precipitation days = 1 |Jul precipitation days = 0 |Aug precipitation days = 0 |Sep precipitation days = 1 |Oct precipitation days = 3 |Nov precipitation days = 7 |Dec precipitation days = 11 |year precipitation days = 65 |source 1 = NOAA }} South San Francisco is frequently windy.
