The name of the municipality (originally the [[parish]]) may have originally been the name for the rectory. In [[Old Norse]] the name was {{lang|non|Skeiðsmór}}. The first element is the [[genitive case]] of {{lang|non|skeið}}, a [[Grammatical gender|neuter]] [[noun]]. One possible meaning of this word, {{lang|non|skeið}}, is "a track for footraces or horseraces"; another "a farm road between fields".
