After the collapse of Maj. Gen. [[George B. McClellan]]'s [[Peninsula Campaign]] in the [[Seven Days Battles]] of June 1862, [[President of the United States|President]] [[Abraham Lincoln]] appointed John Pope to command the newly formed Army of Virginia.
