Each player draws one card for each piece under their control to determine their initial location(s), with Mr. X drawing first.<ref name=Hasbro-85/> The detectives place their tokens at the locations they drew, but Mr. X does not. The locations on the cards are spaced far enough apart to ensure that Mr. X cannot be caught in the first round of play.
