===Name===
The municipality (originally the [[prestegjeld|parish]]) is named after the old ''[[Saudasjøen|Sauda]]'' farm ({{langx|non|Sauðar}}) since the first [[Sauda Church]] was built there. The farm is now part of the village of [[Saudasjøen]]. The name seems to come from the word {{wikt-lang|non|sauðr}} which means "[[sheep]]", however, the same word is also the singular past indicative of the verb {{wikt-lang|non|sjóða}} which means "to seethe" or "to boil", possibly referring to a [[spring (hydrosphere)|spring]] of water.<ref>{{Cite book |last=Rygh |first=Oluf |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=u4pBAAAAIAAJ |title=Norske gaardnavne: Stavanger amt |date=1915 |publisher=W.
