===Eighteenth century===
The [[Seneca people|Seneca]] tribe of the [[Iroquois Confederacy]] lived around Rochester prior to the [[American Revolution]], and used the area as a hunting ground.<ref>{{cite book |last1=McKelvey |first1=Blake |title=ROCHESTER THE WATER - POWER CITY 1812-1854 |date=1945 |publisher=Harvard University Press |location=Cambridge |page=9 |url=https://archive.org/details/rochesterthewate000355mbp/page/n115/mode/2up |access-date=13 January 2024}}</ref> Allied with the British, the Seneca were forced to cede or sell most of their land in New York after the war. The area now occupied by Rochester was ceded in the [[Phelps and Gorham Purchase]] of 1788.
