===Municipal history===
The former municipality of ''Rissen'' was established in 1860 when it was separated from the large [[Stadsbygd Municipality]]. Initially, Rissen Municipality had 3,733 residents. The spelling of the name was later changed to ''Rissa Municipality''. On 1 January 1905, the southwestern district of the municipality (population: 1,019) on the west side of the [[Trondheimsfjord]] was separated to form the new [[Lensvik Municipality]]. This left Rissa Municipality with 3,394 residents. During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the [[Schei Committee]].
