A few taller hills ring the valley, including Federal Hill, which is notable as the site of the [[Pompton Mutiny]], a revolt of [[Continental Army]] troops that occurred there on January 20, 1781, under the command of Colonel [[Israel Shreve]].<ref>[http://www.hiddennj.com/2014/07/revolt-and-execution-little-known.html "Revolt and execution: the little known Pompton Mutiny"], Hidden New Jersey, July 1, 2014.
