==Geography== Palatine is in western Montgomery County, bordered to the north by [[Fulton County, New York|Fulton County]], to the east by the town of [[Mohawk, Montgomery County, New York|Mohawk]], to the northwest by the town of St. Johnsville, and to the south and west by the [[Mohawk River]]. The village of [[Palatine Bridge, New York|Palatine Bridge]] is along the Mohawk and the southern town line, and the village of [[Nelliston, New York|Nelliston]] is further west along the Mohawk. The village of [[Canajoharie (village), New York|Canajoharie]] borders Palatine to the south across the Mohawk. [[New York State Route 5]] runs through the town, following the Mohawk River and passing through Palatine Bridge and Nelliston. It leads east (downriver) {{convert|11|mi|0}} to [[Fonda, New York|Fonda]], the Montgomery [[county seat]], and northwest (upriver) {{convert|9|mi|0}} to [[St. Johnsville (village), New York|St. Johnsville]] and {{convert|18|mi}} to [[Little Falls, New York|Little Falls]]. [[New York State Route 10|State Route 10]] crosses the center of Palatine, passes through Palatine Bridge, and leads north {{Convert|19|mi}} to [[Caroga Lake, New York|Caroga Lake]] and south through Canajoharie village {{convert|11|mi|0}} to [[Sharon Springs, New York|Sharon Springs]]. [[New York State Route 67|State Route 67]] crosses the northwest corner of the town, leading east {{convert|10|mi|0}} to [[Johnstown, New York|Johnstown]] and west {{convert|8|mi|0}} to [[St. Johnsville (village), New York|St. Johnsville]]. According to the [[U.S. Census Bureau]], the town of Palatine has a total area of {{convert|41.7|sqmi}}, of which {{convert|41.1|sqmi}} are land and {{convert|0.6|sqmi|1}}, or 1.51%, are water.<ref name="CenPopGazetteer2024"/> The town is drained by south-flowing tributaries of the [[Mohawk River]], most notably [[Caroga Creek]] in the west and [[Knauderack Creek]] in the east.
