==Geography== [[File:Marshland near Euclid Avenue in Palatine, Illinois.jpg|thumb|Undeveloped wooded marshland near Euclid Avenue in southern Palatine]] According to the 2021 census gazetteer files, Palatine has a total area of {{convert|14.28|sqmi|km2|2}}, of which {{convert|14.11|sqmi|km2|2}} (or 98.87%) is land and {{convert|0.16|sqmi|km2|2}} (or 1.13%) is water.<ref name="gaz2021">{{Cite web |title=Gazetteer Files |url=https://www.census.gov/geographies/reference-files/time-series/geo/gazetteer-files.html |access-date=June 29, 2022 |website=Census.gov}}</ref> Located primarily in [[Cook County, Illinois|Cook County]], a portion extends into neighboring [[Lake County, Illinois|Lake County]].<ref>{{Cite web|title=Palatine village, Illinois|url=https://data-lakecountyil.opendata.arcgis.com/documents/lakecountyil::village-of-palatine/explore|website=[[Lake County, Illinois]] Open Data|accessdate=February 12, 2025}}</ref> Palatine is in a wooded marshland where several streams rise around the village. Most of these streams meet up with [[Salt Creek (Des Plaines River tributary)|Salt Creek]] which rises at Wilke Marsh on the village's east side. The most notable exception is the northeast side, where its streams lie in the [[Buffalo Creek (Illinois)|Buffalo Creek]] watershed. A small part of the east and southeast sides lies in the McDonald Creek watershed. {{clear|left}}
