The county was created in 1840 as Okkuddo County<ref>{{Cite book |last=George Dawson |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=aDg4AAAAIAAJ&pg=PA196 |title=Acts of the Legislature of the State of Michigan Passed at the Annual Session of 1840 |date=1840 |location=Detroit |pages=196–200}}</ref> (meaning "sickly water," although the reason for using a name with such a negative meaning is lost).
