The western town line is the border of [[Queens|Queens County]], [[New York (state)|New York]], part of [[New York City]]. The northern town line, delineated by the [[Long Island Sound]], is the border of [[The Bronx|Bronx County]] (also part of New York City) and [[Westchester County, New York|Westchester County]]. The [[Town of Oyster Bay]] and the [[City of Glen Cove, New York|City of Glen Cove]] are its eastern neighbors, and the [[Town of Hempstead]] is its southern neighbor.

According to the [[United States Census Bureau|U.S. Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|69.2|sqmi}}, of which {{convert|53.5|sqmi}} is land and {{convert|15.7|sqmi}}, or 22.62%, is water.

North Hempstead is the only town on Long Island that does not have a corresponding hamlet or village in its borders with the same name; [[Hempstead, New York|Hempstead]] and [[Oyster Bay (town), New York|Oyster Bay]] in [[Nassau County, New York|Nassau County]] and the towns of [[Huntington, New York|Huntington]], [[Babylon (town), New York|Babylon]], [[Islip (town), New York|Islip]], [[Smithtown, New York|Smithtown]], [[Brookhaven, New York|Brookhaven]], [[Riverhead (town), New York|Riverhead]], [[Southold (town), New York|Southold]], [[Southampton (town), New York|Southampton]], [[Shelter Island (town), New York|Shelter Island]] and [[East Hampton (town), New York|East Hampton]] in [[Suffolk County, New York|Suffolk County]] all have smaller neighborhoods with the same name.<ref name=":1" />
