===Name===
The municipality (originally the [[prestegjeld|parish]]) is named after the old ''Fron'' farm ({{langx|non|Frón}}) since the first [[Sør-Fron Church|Fron Church]] was built there. The first element is {{wikt-lang|non|nord}} which means "northern". The last element is uncertain, but it may come from the word {{wikt-lang|non|frón}}, which means "earth" or "land". Thus the name of the municipality is "(the) northern (part of) Fron" (since the parish of Fron was divided in 1851 into a "north" and a "south" part).
