Napoleon lies just a few miles west of [[Wellington, Missouri|Wellington]], the two towns having been named after the commanders at the [[Battle of Waterloo]]. Approximately halfway between the two towns lies a small, unincorporated crossroads called "Waterloo".

Napoleon is located in the northwestern corner of [[Lafayette County, Missouri|Lafayette County]] and bordered on the north side by the [[Missouri River]] and on the south side by [[U.S. Route 24 in Missouri|U.S. Route 24]] and on the west by [[Jackson County, Missouri|Jackson County]]. It is approximately {{Convert|40|mi|km|spell=|abbr=}} east of the [[Kansas]]/[[Missouri]] line on the south side of the Missouri River and about {{Convert|6|mi|km|spell=|abbr=}} east of the [[Independence, Missouri|Independence]] city limits as of this writing. The town measures about {{Convert|2.5|mi|km|spell=|abbr=}} east to west and about {{Convert|1|mi|km|spell=|abbr=}} north to south at its widest point.
