===Name===
The municipality is named Namsskogan, a name which was created in 1923. The first element is {{lang|no|Nams-}} which comes from the name of the river [[Namsen]] and the last element is the [[plural]] form of {{lang|no|skog}} which means "[[woodland|woods]]". Therefore, the meaning of the name is "the woodlands around Namsen". The river name has an uncertain origin. The first part of the river name comes from the [[Old Norse]] word {{lang|non|Nauma}}) which has an unknown meaning, but it may come from the word {{lang|no|naust}} which means "boat".
