The national park consists of two separate areas.<ref name="DEH-2006" />{{rp|pages=1-2}} The first is the parcel of land (often called a "block") located immediately west of the town of [[Melrose, South Australia|Melrose]] and consists of three areas: the Warren Bonython Link, Mambray Creek and [[Mount Remarkable]]. This block occupies {{convert|165.83|km2|abbr=on}}.<ref name="DEH-2006" />{{rp|pages=1-2}}

The second parcel of land is known as the Telowie Block and has an area of {{convert|0.35|km2|abbr=on}}. It is located on the west side of the old Telowie Gorge Conservation Park (now part of Wapma Thura–Southern Flinders Ranges National Park) about {{convert|7.5|km|abbr=on}} east of the town of [[Port Germein, South Australia|Port Germein]] and about {{convert|24|km|abbr=on}} south of the block located at Melrose.<ref name="DEH-2006" />{{rp|pages=1-2}}

The park is classified as an [[International Union for Conservation of Nature|IUCN]] [[IUCN protected area categories#Category VI – Protected Area with sustainable use of natural resources|Category VI protected area]].<ref name="CAPAD2016SASum" />
