Merritt Township was organized on July 8, 1871, with the area being detached from [[Portsmouth Township, Michigan|Portsmouth Township]].<ref>{{usurped|1=[https://web.archive.org/web/20030907042947/http://bay-journal.com/bay/merritt/index.html Merritt Township Main Page]}}.
