The Quran refers to the city as [[Bakkah|{{transliteration|ar|Bakkah}}]] in [[Surah]] [[Al Imran]] (3), verse 96: "Indeed the first [[Place of worship|House [of worship]]], established for mankind was that at Bakkah".
