In 1951, he became a primary school teacher. On 22 June 1952,<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://users.utu.fi/isoi/esipolvi/kankaanr.htm|title=Kankaanranta|website=users.utu.fi|access-date=2018-05-21}}</ref> he married [[Tellervo Kankaanranta]]. Together they had a daughter, Assi Koivisto, who was later voted to the electoral college during the [[1982 Finnish presidential election|1982 presidential election]]. Koivisto graduated from the [[University of Turku]] with a [[Master of Arts]] degree and a [[Licentiate (degree)|licentiate]] in 1953, and had plans to become a [[Sociology|sociologist]]. Three years later he completed his doctoral thesis, which examined social relations in the Turku dockyards. Koivisto also served as Vocational Counselor for the City of Turku, and as a member of the Turku City Council.
