===Birth, army career===
Maximus was born in [[Gallaecia]], Hispania, on the estates of [[Count Theodosius]] (the Elder) of the [[Theodosian dynasty]], to whom he claimed to be related.<ref name="The Cambridge Medieval History 1924 p. 238">[[J.
