At birth he was the [[heir apparent]] but was not given the traditional title of "[[Prince of Asturias]]" until April 1709.<ref name=perez >{{cite book|author=Pérez de Guzmán y Gallo, Juan|title=El Principado de Asturias: bosquejo histórico-documental|location=Madri|publisher=Imprenta de Manuel G. Hernández|year=1880|page=271 }}</ref> In 1714, when Louis was seven, his mother died, leaving him and his brothers, [[Infante Philip of Spain (1712–1719)|''Infante'' Philip]] and [[Ferdinand VI of Spain|''Infante'' Ferdinand]]. On 24 December 1714, Louis' father remarried to [[Elisabeth Farnese]], the young heiress to the [[Duchy of Parma and Piacenza]].
