==History==
The borough was formed in 1965 under the [[London Government Act 1963]], covering the whole of the former [[municipal borough]]s of [[Municipal Borough of Ilford|Ilford]] and [[Municipal Borough of Wanstead and Woodford|Wanstead and Woodford]], plus smaller areas from the [[Municipal Borough of Dagenham]] and [[Chigwell Urban District]], which were included to unite in one borough the [[Hainault, London|Hainault]] area which had previously straddled Ilford, Dagenham and Chigwell.<ref>{{cite vob|name=Redbridge|url=http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/relationships.jsp?u_id=10074356|access-date=10 February 2008|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120104163437/http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/relationships.jsp?u_id=10074356|archive-date=4 January 2012}}</ref> The area was transferred from [[Essex]] to Greater London to become one of the 32 London Boroughs.<ref>{{cite book | first=Frederic |last=Youngs | title=Guide to the Local Administrative Units of England | volume=I: Southern England | year=1979 | publisher=[[Royal Historical Society]] | location=London | isbn=0-901050-67-9}}</ref>
