According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.32 sqmi, all land. The city is located in the exact center of the state of Montana and is part of the Rocky Mountains. The city's water source is Big Spring Creek, which originates in the foothills of the Big Snowy Mountains 6 mi south of Lewistown. ===Climate=== Lewistown experiences a relatively dry humid continental climate (Kรถppen Dfb) with long, dry and usually cold winters and short, warm, wetter summers. Winter weather can either be severe due to the movement of cold polar air from Canada, or occasionally very mild or even warm due to gusty chinook winds. On average 9.3 afternoons will reach 50 F during the three winter months, but on the other hand, 46.6 afternoons during a full year will fail to top freezing, 0 F is reached on 21.5 mornings and on two mornings each winter, with as many as twelve this cold during the severe winter of 1928โ29. Temperatures do not consistently stay above freezing until June: the average window for freezing temperatures is from September 19 to May 23 โ allowing a "growing season" of 92 days โ and for subfreezing maxima from October 26 to April 2. The hottest temperature at Lewistown has been 105 F on June 21, 1900 and July 31, 1900, and the coldest on 28 January 1929. The hottest minimum has been 71 F on July 17, 1925, and the coldest maximum on January 29, 1916; the coldest month was January 1950 which averaged . During the summer, days are very warm, but nights remain cool and rare freezes have occurred. Most precipitation is from spring thunderstorms: the wettest calendar year has been 1953 with 28.61 in and the driest 2021 with 10.91 in. Despite the dry conditions, winter snowfall is substantial with an average of 63.1 in; however the frequent chinooks keep mean snow cover down to 9 in in January. The most snow on the ground has been 33 in on February 1 and 2, 1978. February 1978 also had the highest mean snow cover at 27.1 in; the snowiest year has been 1955 with 172.5 in and the least snowy was 1992 with only 30.2 in, and the most snow in a month 41.0 in during March 1954. {{Weather box |location = Lewistown, Montana (Lewistown Municipal Airport), 1991โ2020 normals, extremes 1896โpresent |single line = Yes |collapsed = yes |Jan record high F = 73 |Feb record high F = 70 |Mar record high F = 88 |Apr record high F = 89 |May record high F = 98 |Jun record high F = 105 |Jul record high F = 105 |Aug record high F = 103 |Sep record high F = 100 |Oct record high F = 92 |Nov record high F = 81 |Dec record high F = 74 |year record high F = |Jan avg record high F = 54.4 |Feb avg record high F = 54.3 |Mar avg record high F = 64.2 |Apr avg record high F = 74.8 |May avg record high F = 80.4 |Jun avg record high F = 87.6 |Jul avg record high F = 94.1 |Aug avg record high F = 94.5 |Sep avg record high F = 90.0 |Oct avg record high F = 79.5 |Nov avg record high F = 65.9 |Dec avg record high F = 53.9 |year avg record high F = 96.5 |Jan high F = 34.4 |Feb high F = 35.3 |Mar high F = 44.3 |Apr high F = 53.0 |May high F = 62.6 |Jun high F = 71.0 |Jul high F = 81.6 |Aug high F = 81.1 |Sep high F = 70.4 |Oct high F = 56.0 |Nov high F = 43.4 |Dec high F = 35.0 |year high F = |Jan mean F = 23.7 |Feb mean F = 24.6 |Mar mean F = 32.9 |Apr mean F = 40.9 |May mean F = 50.0 |Jun mean F = 58.0 |Jul mean F = 66.1 |Aug mean F = 65.4 |Sep mean F = 55.9 |Oct mean F = 43.4 |Nov mean F = 32.1 |Dec mean F = 24.3 |year mean F = |Jan low F = 12.9 |Feb low F = 13.9 |Mar low F = 21.4 |Apr low F = 28.8 |May low F = 37.4 |Jun low F = 45.1 |Jul low F = 50.7 |Aug low F = 49.6 |Sep low F = 41.5 |Oct low F = 30.8 |Nov low F = 20.9 |Dec low F = 13.6 |year low F = |Jan avg record low F = -14.6 |Feb avg record low F = -9.6 |Mar avg record low F = -1.2 |Apr avg record low F = 12.9 |May avg record low F = 24.5 |Jun avg record low F = 34.2 |Jul avg record low F = 41.3 |Aug avg record low F = 39.0 |Sep avg record low F = 28.6 |Oct avg record low F = 12.5 |Nov avg record low F = -2.8 |Dec avg record low F = -11.2 |year avg record low F = -23.1 |Jan record low F = โ46 |Feb record low F = โ42 |Mar record low F = โ34 |Apr record low F = โ17 |May record low F = 11 |Jun record low F = 23 |Jul record low F = 27 |Aug record low F = 27 |Sep record low F = 6 |Oct record low F = โ10 |Nov record low F = โ30 |Dec record low F = โ42 |year record low F= |precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation inch = 0.58 |Feb precipitation inch = 0.49 |Mar precipitation inch = 0.87 |Apr precipitation inch = 1.71 |May precipitation inch = 2.88 |Jun precipitation inch = 3.35 |Jul precipitation inch = 1.76 |Aug precipitation inch = 1.69 |Sep precipitation inch = 1.39 |Oct precipitation inch = 1.27 |Nov precipitation inch = 0.67 |Dec precipitation inch = 0.51 |year precipitation inch = |Jan snow inch = 9.6 |Feb snow inch = 5.1 |Mar snow inch = 12.0 |Apr snow inch = 8.0 |May snow inch = 4.8 |Jun snow inch = 0.1 |Jul snow inch = 0.0 |Aug snow inch = 0.0 |Sep snow inch = 1.6 |Oct snow inch = 3.9 |Nov snow inch = 7.5 |Dec snow inch = 10.5 |year snow inch = |unit precipitation days = 0.01 in |Jan precipitation days = 7.7 |Feb precipitation days = 8.2 |Mar precipitation days = 9.1 |Apr precipitation days = 11.7 |May precipitation days = 13.7 |Jun precipitation days = 13.6 |Jul precipitation days = 10.3 |Aug precipitation days = 9.0 |Sep precipitation days = 8.5 |Oct precipitation days = 9.4 |Nov precipitation days = 7.4 |Dec precipitation days = 7.3 |unit snow days = 0.1 in |Jan snow days = 7.9 |Feb snow days = 6.3 |Mar snow days = 8.4 |Apr snow days = 5.7 |May snow days = 2.0 |Jun snow days = 0.1 |Jul snow days = 0.0 |Aug snow days = 0.0 |Sep snow days = 1.2 |Oct snow days = 3.2 |Nov snow days = 6.2 |Dec snow days = 8.6 |source 1 = NOAA (average snow/snow days 1981โ2010)<ref name = NOAA> {{cite web |url = https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/services/data/v1?dataset=normals-monthly-1991-2020&stations=USW00024036&format=pdf&dataTypes=MLY-TMAX-NORMAL,MLY-TMIN-NORMAL,MLY-TAVG-NORMAL,MLY-PRCP-NORMAL,MLY-SNOW-NORMAL |publisher = National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration |title = U.S. Climate Normals Quick Access -
