In 1978, Koko gained worldwide attention when she was pictured on the cover of ''[[National Geographic]]'' magazine. The cover was a photo of Koko taking her own picture in the mirror. In 1985, [[Scholastic Corporation|Scholastic Inc.]] published ''Koko's Kitten'', a children's picture book based on the ''National Geographic'' story.
